A CIBIL score is a three-digit number that usually ranges from 300 to 900 and reflects an individual’s creditworthiness. It is a crucial indicator for tracking a user’s financial health, and here we now see the easiest ways to check the CIBIL score.

If you have ever applied for a loan, a credit card, or used a pay-later service, you might have heard about the CIBIL score term. This 3-digit metric plays a major role in your financial life, as it determines whether you are trustworthy with credit.

However, many users still think checking their CIBIL score is complicated and requires a lot of legalities. But the good news is that you can check it for free. Here is a simple guide to check your CIBIL score through easy-to-follow methods.

Most banks and financial institutions determine the CIBIL score based on how you’ve paid EMIs, used credit cards, and managed debt. A CIBIL usually ranges between 300 and 900. The higher your score, the better your chances of getting loans at good interest rates or approvals for credit cards.

A score above 750 is generally considered strong because it indicates you repay your loans and credit card bills on time and handle credit responsibly.

How to check your CIBIL score on the official website?

The official website of CIBIL (TransUnion CIBIL) lets you check this score for free once every year. On the homepage of the website, there will be a section that says “Get Free CIBIL Score & Report.” After you click on that, you will need to create an account and enter basic credentials like name, birth date, address and PAN number.

Once your identity is verified through the phone number or email address, you will be presented with your free CIBIL score and report.

How to check your CIBIL score through BHIM?

Many third-party banking apps like Paytm, PhonePe, Cred, and others provide access to the CIBIL score of a user every month.

However, recently, National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), through BHIM Services, has tied up with TransUnion CIBIL to make the CIBIL check feature available on the BHIM app. Follow these steps to check your CIBIL score on the BHIM app.

  • Update the BHIM app to the latest version or download the app from the Play Store or App Store
  • Login with your mobile number on the BHIM app and enter the UPI pin.
  • Scroll down to the Financial services section and tap on ‘Free CIBIL Score.’

Enter basic credentials like PAN card number, First and Last name and tap on Proceed. Your CIBIL score and full credit report will now be visible on the app.

Tips to maintain and improve your CIBIL score

Your CIBIL score is usually lower than 750 if you have, in the past, missed EMIs or payment of credit card bills before the due date.

Moreover, too many loan applications can also hurt your score. However, to improve and maintain it, you must ensure that timely payments of credit card bills must be done. Further, you should also keep your credit utilisation below 30% of your full credit limit and avoid applying for multiple loans.
