If your laptop’s battery is getting drained faster, it might be time to check for its condition or you can configure several settings to save more battery. Here are some tips to extend the battery life of a Windows laptop.

Windows gives you the “Energy recommendations” option in Settings and you can do the following to make the changes.  From the Settings you can select the energy-saving option that should help bring down the power usage of your laptop.

Here you can apply the entire collection of settings or choose them individually.

Similarly, you can turn on Energy Saver via the Power & battery option in Settings.

  • Go to Start  > Settings  > System  > Power & battery > Energy Saver

Here, you can set the energy saver mode to run always or turn on automatically at a certain battery level (for example, 30%). There is also the option to lower the screen brightness when using Energy Saver.

Besides this, you can reduce the display brightness of your Windows laptop which can also preserve the battery life and make it run longer.

  • Go to Start  > Settings  > System  > Display  > Brightness

For more advanced and premium laptops, users can reduce the refresh rate of the display. A higher refresh rate means more power consumption. Here's how you can lower the screen refresh rate in on Windows laptop:

  • Go to Start  > Settings  > System  > Display  > Advanced display

One other useful tip that we can suggest is try using a dark picture or dark solid colour for the display background. Experts suggest this helps extend the Windows laptop battery, too.

  • Go to Start  > Settings  > Personalization  > Background.

And yes, you also have the option to select a dark theme for the laptop display to bring down energy usage of the laptop.

  • Go to Start  > Settings  > Personalization  > Themes > Current theme, and set a dark theme.

Users can set the Windows laptop screen to 'turn off by itself' when the laptop is not in use and set a short duration for it.

  • Go to Start  > Settings  > System  > Power & battery  > Screen and sleep.

Windows apps could be draining your laptop battery by running in the background. The good news is that some apps allow you to manage their background activity.

Go to Start  > Settings  > System  > Power & battery  > Battery usage.

A list of apps will open up. Here, you can easily see the percentage of battery usage per app to know which ones are consuming more battery in the background.

The Windows app that gives you control over its background activity will have the triple-dot icon (More options) enabled.

Click on More options  > Background app permissions. Here you can pick from three options: Always, Power Optimized and Never.
