Huawei takes the lead over Samsung and Apple by unveiling the first wide-foldable device in the form of Pura X Max this week. Wide foldables look smaller but broader in dimensions compared to the regular version, and it seems Apple is going to use this layout for its first iPhone foldable which is heavily tipped to launch this year.

Huawei Pura X Max is unlikely to head out of China but gives us a teaser into what other brands can offer with the new form factor in the foldable segment.

Huawei’s wide Pura X Max foldable: What it offers

The Pura X Max has a wider foldable profile, much like the book-style versions we have seen earlier and comes with a 14:1:10 aspect ratio that is as wide as they come in the market. Using them with one hand was already a task but the wider profile might make having stylus support unavoidable and Huawei has shown that with the Pura X Max.

You also have the market ripe for cases with a stand that let the fold stand firm on the surface. Maybe having a mini keyboard dock won’t be the worst idea either.

The wider fold has a 5,300mAh battery with 66W wired and 50W wireless fast charging supported. The build of the fold has aluminium alloy and comes with IP58/IP59 rated for dust and water resistance. The device has a 50MP triple camera system which includes a periscope telephoto lens. It is powered by Huawei’s Kirin 9030 Pro chipset with up to 16GB RAM and 1TB storage.

The new iPhone Fold?

Apple’s iPhone Fold could come with an Ultra moniker and its design leaks hint at a similar design and form factor. Apple will be putting a lot of faith in this style for its big entry, which also marks the new Apple CEO John Ternus hogging the limelight as he takes over from Tim Cook later this year. Even Samsung plans to launch its wide Galaxy Z Fold 8 model soon and we should be hearing more on that over the next few months.
