Apple has unveiled iOS 27, the next major software update for iPhone users, at its WWDC 2026 developer conference. The update focuses on improving performance, refining the user experience introduced with iOS 26, and bringing a redesigned Siri powered by Apple’s latest AI technologies built on Gemini-based models.

The company confirmed that iOS 27 will be available for all iPhone models that currently support iOS 26, including devices as old as the iPhone 11. The developer beta is available now, while the public beta is expected later this summer. The final version will roll out this fall.

Gemini-powered Siri arrives

One of the biggest announcements is the arrival of the new Siri experience. Apple said Siri can now understand personal context and on-screen information, enabling more natural conversations and follow-up questions.

The assistant is integrated into the Dynamic Island and can also be accessed through a dedicated Siri app that syncs conversation history across devices using iCloud. Siri interactions can continue across iPhone, Apple Watch, AirPods, CarPlay and Vision Pro.

Apple said its next-generation Foundation Models are trained using Gemini technology while also leveraging Private Cloud Compute for AI processing. The new Siri experience will initially launch in English, with additional languages planned later.

Liquid Glass gets more control

Apple has also updated its Liquid Glass design language. A new transparency slider allows users to adjust the appearance of interface elements, making them more opaque or more transparent based on personal preference.

The company has also redesigned sidebars and visual elements across the operating system. Icons now feature additional visual layers that Apple says improve clarity and depth.

Faster performance across supported iPhones

Alongside design and AI changes, Apple highlighted several performance improvements. According to the company, apps launch up to 30% faster, Photo Library content appears up to 70% faster, and AirDrop transfers can be up to 80% quicker.

Apple also introduced a rebuilt CPU scheduler designed to improve responsiveness across supported devices, including older iPhone models. Additional changes include a refreshed search index for Spotlight, Photos and Mail, along with an iMessage upload progress indicator that shows the status of media transfers in real time.
