Apple’s next entry-level iPad is expected to retain its current design while adding a faster chip, more RAM and possible connectivity upgrades.
Apple is reportedly developing the 12th-generation iPad as its next affordable tablet. The model is now expected to arrive in the first quarter of 2027, later than earlier reports suggesting a launch sometime in 2026.

The forthcoming iPad is unlikely to receive a major redesign. Instead, Apple is expected to focus on internal upgrades, including a newer A-series processor that would bring Apple Intelligence features to its entry-level tablet for the first time.

The 12th-generation iPad is expected to retain the design introduced with the 10th-generation model. This would include an approximately 11-inch edge-to-edge display, thick bezels and a Touch ID sensor built into the side-mounted power button.
The tablet is also expected to retain its USB Type-C port and support for compatible Apple Pencil accessories. No significant upgrades have been reported for its front or rear cameras.
Apple’s entry-level iPad currently uses a non-laminated Retina LED display without ProMotion or P3 wide-colour support. These limitations help distinguish it from the more expensive iPad Air and iPad Pro models, and they are expected to remain with the next generation.
A18 or A19 Chip May Bring Apple Intelligence
The most important upgrade may be the processor. Apple is reportedly considering the A18 or A19 chip, both of which use a 3nm manufacturing process and support Apple Intelligence.
The current 11th-generation iPad uses an A16 chip and does not support Apple’s generative AI features. Moving to a newer processor would give the affordable model access to compatible writing, image-generation and productivity tools.
Apple may also increase the RAM from 6GB to at least 8GB, which is currently required for running Apple Intelligence. The newer processor would additionally provide hardware-accelerated ray tracing and improved gaming performance.
Connectivity Upgrades Remain Uncertain
The new iPad may use Apple’s N1 wireless chip, which supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread connectivity. The current model is limited to Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3.
However, leaked information indicates Apple may reserve the N1 for selected premium products. Its inclusion in the entry-level iPad therefore remains uncertain.
Cellular versions may also adopt an Apple-designed modem instead of a Qualcomm component. Apple’s C-series modems are designed to improve power efficiency while providing comparable mobile connectivity.
Expected Price and Launch Timeline
The 12th-generation iPad is currently expected to launch during the first quarter of 2027. Apple has not confirmed the device or its release schedule.
In the US, pricing may start at $449 for the 128GB model, matching the revised price of its predecessor. Indian pricing remains unknown and will depend on component costs, currency movements and Apple’s regional pricing strategy at launch.
