Gaming comes in different avatars and one of them runs on the cloud. Cloud gaming, as the name suggests, is hosted through a server and gives you direct access to the games without needing a specific hardware to play them. For a long time, you have needed to invest in a gaming console that doesn't come cheap and even then you have to spend on the games (both digital and physical versions).

Cloud gaming has been around for a while, and some like the Google Stadia have shut shop, but Apple continues to serve its users with Arcade. So what is cloud gaming as a whole ecosystem, how exactly does it run and what all do you need to play the games on the cloud.

How cloud gaming works

It is a service that runs video games on remote servers in data centers, streaming the video and audio output directly to a user's device. It eliminates the need for expensive consoles or PCs, allowing high-end gaming on low-power devices like smartphones, tablets, or smart TVs via a stable, high-speed internet connection

To run cloud gaming services that host a wide range of games, you need a powerful server that can not only host the titles for millions, but also work seamlessly with low latency. When the person starts a game on these platforms, their request is sent to the server, processed, and the resulting game is sent back instantly.

Cloud gaming also negates the use of extra storage as you don’t need to download the app/game which generally takes up space on the console. You get the games streamed instantly, removing the need for local storage space.

And yes, it cannot be denied that a cloud setup completely removes the limitation of using a console like the PS5 or an Xbox. These games on the cloud can be played across devices and even platforms. You can play on browsers (e.g., Chrome), smart TVs, and mobile devices as well. Just need to invest in a good set of controllers and you’re good to go.

What you need for cloud gaming

So how can you get started with cloud gaming? It generally needs a very fast and stable internet connection that offers low-latency to reduce the lag while playing the games.

Is cloud gaming better than PC gaming?

The fact that cloud gaming allows you to play games without owning top-tier hardware is an obvious benefit. You can start playing immediately, often with the ability to pause on one device and resume on another. Having said that, cloud gaming might not get the best games from day one, so you might have to wait for them to be available on the respective platforms.
