The demand for AI servers have pushed most companies to move their production of memory chips for the sector which has directly caused a shortage in the consumer segment.

The chip makers are going for their own changes with the likes of Qualcomm and TSMC set up to charge a higher price for these new processors that the likes of Samsung and Apple will be using on their future devices.

Qualcomm has been quoted by Bloomberg suggesting a double-digit price hike on processors that will come into effect from September 1. This news will have a ripple effect across brands, including Apple which is set to launch the iPhone 18 Pro series around the same time.

Samsung has already hiked the Galaxy Z Fold 8 prices by around $100 (Rs 9,600 approx) and Google is going to do the same with the new Pixel 11 series phones next month.

Going up and up

We’ve done multiple stories highlighting the plight of the market and the consumers but the relentless nature of these changes are unlikely to stop anytime soon. In fact, chip makers joining the price wagon means the industry is set for further slowdown which has already become evident in the last few quarters.

Where does it end?

Industry analysts have warned that the shortage is likely to go on for another 12 months at least which will impact how much people pay for these products in the market.

Apple has claimed that it is being forced to increase prices, but when the market value shoots up, only the consumers are crying. Fair to say, most of these high-end purchases now involve financing for buyers, and that will probably be the only way going forward.
