Google has announced a major update for Android Auto and cars with Google built-in during Android Show 2026, introducing Gemini AI integration, redesigned navigation tools, YouTube support and immersive Google Maps experiences for compatible vehicles.

The company said more than 250 million Android Auto-compatible cars are currently on roads globally. The latest update is aimed at improving the in-car experience with smarter voice assistance, upgraded entertainment options and redesigned interfaces built around Google’s Material 3 Expressive design language.

Android Auto is receiving a refreshed interface with updated fonts, smoother animations and wallpapers designed specifically for car displays. Google is also introducing widget support, allowing drivers to place shortcuts and glanceable information directly on the dashboard. Users will be able to access widgets for weather updates, favourite contacts and connected smart home controls such as garage door access.

The updated interface is designed to adapt to multiple display formats, including ultrawide and circular screens found in newer vehicles.

Google Maps is also getting a major overhaul through a new feature called Immersive Navigation. The system introduces a more detailed 3D-style map experience with enhanced visuals for buildings, overpasses and road layouts. Google said the feature will also highlight traffic lights, stop signs and lane guidance information to help drivers during turns and highway exits.

For vehicles with Google built-in, Google is introducing live lane guidance powered by the car’s front-facing camera. The system can analyse roads in real time and help drivers choose the correct lane while merging or exiting.

Google is additionally expanding entertainment support inside cars. Android Auto users will soon be able to watch YouTube videos in full HD at 60fps while parked or charging. When the vehicle starts moving, supported apps can automatically switch from video playback to audio-only mode for podcasts or long-form content.

Gemini AI is becoming more deeply integrated into Android Auto as well. Google demonstrated Gemini helping users find addresses from conversations, place food delivery orders using voice commands and answer vehicle-related questions such as dashboard warning indicators or luggage capacity.

Google said the new Android Auto features will roll out to supported vehicles later this year.
