Netflix is facing a legal challenge where users are accusing the platform of spying on them while they watch shows and movies on the streaming app. The State of Texas has gone ahead with the case and demanded answers from the platform about its alleged dark practices that involve tracking your activities and even collecting user data without their consent.

The report by Reuters says the lawsuit has been filed by the office of attorney general in Texas who are worried about the streaming app misusing its access to billions.

They watch you, watching you

The lawsuit builds on the concerning premise of streaming apps able to track what you watch and build a customised profile and also monetise from all the data collected. The use of Dark pattern in the lawsuit is hardly surprising and goes with the issues highlighted by various privacy reports around the use and growth of smart TVs in households.

Search engines have used these practices to know more about users for years and these new smart devices are the obvious targets for the companies as people evolve and adopt newer products for their daily use.

Lawsuits of this nature are unavoidable and companies like Netflix will have to comply or at least tone down their practices so that people are happy to pay for their services, even if the model includes ads between shows/movies. This case is likely to go on for a while, and at best, you can expect the platform to face some penalty which it might be ordered to pay the consumers affected in the region.

Apple is also quite frequent with these lawsuits, and has repeatedly doled out compensations for different cases. You had the infamous batterygate where each iPhone user and their eligible model got a modest sum of around $15-$20. Similarly, the company is now being asked to pay its users for deceiving them into buying a new iPhone with the promise of launching its AI features with the hardware.
